Critical January 2026 Compliance Deadlines for Businesses

As January 2026 approaches, it is crucial for business entities, employers, farmers, and fishermen to be aware of significant tax deadlines. Meticulous planning can ensure that your compliance efforts are accurate and timely, thus steering clear of potential penalties.

January 15 - Employer’s Electronic Tax Deposit Deadline

For employers subject to monthly deposit requirements, January 15 marks the deadline to electronically deposit Social Security, Medicare, and withheld income taxes for December 2025. Additionally, if the monthly deposit rule pertains to nonpayroll withholdings for December, this is also your due date. Deposits must be made electronically, unless your deposit liability is under $2,500 for a return period, permitting quarterly or annual remittance with your return.

January 15 - Farmers and Fishermen’s Estimated Tax Payment

If you are engaged in farming or fishing, make sure to pay your estimated tax for 2025 using Form 1040-ES by this date. While the overall tax filing deadline is April 15 for the 2025 income tax return (Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR), if you miss the January 15 estimated tax payment, it's imperative to file your 2025 return and pay any outstanding tax by March 2, 2026, to avoid penalty.

Adjustment for Weekends and Holidays:

In instances where a deadline coincides with a weekend or legal holiday, the due date is automatically deferred to the next business day that isn't a holiday.

Extensions for Disaster Areas:

For those in declared disaster areas, be aware that extensions to these deadlines may be applicable. It's advisable to review the latest information on disaster designations and relief by visiting the following resources:
